2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible – Interior, Exterior and Drive. The 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible debuts bringing the new, big-nosed styling to the droptop model. Prices start at $53,100 (before a $995 destination charge). These open-roofed coupes arrive in the United States in March 2021 for the rear-wheel variant and July 2021 with all-wheel drive.

The latest generation of the 4 Series Convertible makes the big switch to using a soft material for its roof, rather than having a folding hardtop like the previous model. The soft-top roof is around 40 percent lighter than the previous panels. During top-down motoring, there is 9.0 cubic feet (255 liters) of trunk space, which is 1.2 cubic feet (34 liters) more than before. Inside, occupants benefit from 0.2 inches of additional headroom when the roof is in place.

The roof can open and close within 18 seconds and operates at up to 31 miles per hour (50 kilometers per hour). On the M440i, an owner can operate the top from the key fob, and this is an option for the 430i.

The top comes standard in black. For a more stylish appearance, there’s an optional Moonlight black top that has a metallic shimmer.

In large part, the 4 Series Convertible is identical to the coupe, other than the ability to lower the roof. BMW gives the vehicle some tweaks for improved torsional rigidity like stiffer side skirts, an aluminum shear panel at the front, and reinforced transmission tunnel, and a rigid rear floor plate. The engineers also put attention into extra noise reduction with a focus on the intake system, engine cover, and underbody.

The engine range carries over from the 4 Series coupe. The 430i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower (190 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters). The rear-drive droptop reaches 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in 5.9 seconds. Depending on the wheel and tire combination, the top speed is limited to 130 mph (209 kph) or 155 mph (249 kph).

The M440i has a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology that produces 382 hp (285 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). The rear-drive model hits 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. Like the other model, the top speed is limited to 130 mph (209 kph) or 155 mph (249 kph), depending on which tire-and-wheel combo the buyer selects.

Both engines come with an eight-speed automatic. The M440i also benefits from a standard M Sport rear differential, and it’s optional on the 430i.
