The Stonic is powered by a range of Kia’s most advanced gasoline and diesel engines, designed to maximise mechanical efficiency, performance, and handling enjoyment.

Expected to account for the largest share of sales, the Stonic is equipped with Kia’s lightweight 1.0-litre T-GDI (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) engine. The three-cylinder turbo engine enables immediate acceleration and high fuel efficiency, while reducing front axle weight (compared to larger engines) for more immediate handling responses. The lightweight 1.0-litre T-GDI engine produces its peak 120 ps at 6,000 rpm, and 172 Nm torque between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm. A 100 ps version of the engine will also be available to buyers from mid-2018.

Compared to earlier models fitted with the 1.0-litre T-GDI engine, the Stonic’s engines feature a new split cooling system for the block and piston heads, as well as a new two-stage high pressure oil pump. Both engines retain an integrated exhaust manifold, electronic wastegate actuator and single-scroll turbo to maximise efficiency and deliver enjoyable on-road performance. The 120 ps model will accelerate from 0-to-100 kph in 10.3 seconds, and is capable of 5.0 L/100 km fuel economy. CO2 emissions are rated at 115 g/km (NEDC, combined).

Also available from launch are a pair of naturally-aspirated gasoline MPI (multi-point injection) engines. The 1.25-litre engine produces 84 ps and 122 Nm torque, with CO2 emissions of 118 g/km (NEDC, combined). The 1.4-litre unit produces 100 ps and 133 Nm, with emissions of 125 g/km (NEDC, combined). Both MPI engines feature a new split cooling system with a coolant shut-off valve. These improve fuel efficiency by more carefully managing temperatures on the move, and reducing engine warm-up times.

The most efficient engine in the Stonic range is Kia’s 1.6-litre diesel engine, producing 110 ps and torque of 260 Nm, with emissions from 109 g/km and official combined fuel economy of 4.2 L/100 km (NEDC, combined). An oil cooler bypass valve enables the engine to warm-up more quickly than earlier applications of the engine, while a new continuously-variable displacement oil pump enables more efficient use of oil as engine speeds increase.

Every engine in the Stonic range is paired as standard with a manual transmission that is designed to maximise efficiency and gearshift feel. Six-speed manual transmissions are fitted across the line-up, with the exception of the 1.25-litre MPI engine, which is paired with a five-speed gearbox. The Stonic’s manual transmissions feature a new clutch-gear stopper to reduce friction, enabling greater efficiency and a more pleasing shift feel. New four-point ball bearings reduce surface contact throughout the transmission, for a 1% improvement in transmission unit efficiency.

Kia is currently re-engineering its seven-speed double-clutch transmission for the Stonic, due for introduction in 2018 on certain 1.0-litre T-GDI models.
