2020 Audi RS 4 Avant – high-performance wagon. The facelifted RS4 Avant. It’s not a terrific surprise versus what we were expecting, from its fresh face to updated tech inside and the familiar boosted V6 under the bonnet.

The biggest difference is obviously the Singleframe grille, which is a bit wider and, as such, falls into line with the rest of Audi’s modern-day lineup. For the RS4 Avant it’s actually a bit wider than the base A4, and it consists of the honeycomb structure for which RS models are known. Flanking the grille are new optional matrix LED headlights, surrounded with dark bezels to emphasize the RS4’s down-to-business face. Further back, the RS4’s wheel arches are just over an inch wider compared to the standard A4 Avant, so as to better accommodate the musclewagon’s beefier tires.

The big news for the interior is the new 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen. It’s canted ever-so-slightly towards the driver and adopts the functions that were previously handled by the rotary pushbutton on the center console. Being this is an RS model, the screen can display everything from vital vehicle information to G forces and lap times. Truth be told, we’re not sure this car realizes it’s a station wagon.

For this round at least, the updates are relegated to aesthetics and technology. Under the RS4 Avant’s hood you’ll find the familiar 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, developing 444 horsepower (331 kilowatts) for its standard-issue 19-inch wheels to disseminate into the earth. A range of 20-inchers are optional, with six-piston brake calipers tasked with bringing the superwagon to a standstill when necessary. Shifting is handled by the eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox, and when everything works in harmony, Audi says the RS4 Avant can hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.

Unfortunately for fans in America, Audi doesn’t say if it will come stateside. With the RS6 Avant headed this way, it’s unlikely this smaller long roof will make the journey. Sales in Germany and other European countries will start in October 2019. The new RS 4 Avant will be at dealerships as of December 2019. Prices for the high-performance Avant start at EUR 81,400.
