2020 BMW F 900 XR – Adventure Sports Bike / S 1000 XR’s “Baby Sister”. BMW has revealed a new mid-range adventure sports bike for 2020, the F 900 XR. The new model is a smaller version of the BMW S 1000 XR, which has proved popular with road riders looking for a performance machine capable of covering long distances in comfort without any off-road aspirations.
The F 900 XR will no doubt appeal to a similar crowd but in a mid-size and more affordable package. The bike sports the same engine as the BMW F 850 GS adventure bike with a few tweaks to increase the capacity to 895cc (up from 853cc), with a power output of 105 bhp.
And the comparisons to the mid-weight GS don’t end there with BMW claiming the XR also features GS-like ergonomics designed to ensure you and your passenger have a comfortable ride.
As you would expect with a new BMW motorcycle, the F 900 XR has plenty of technology on hand to enhance the riding experience, including two standard riding modes (Rain and Road), traction control, ABS, and a 6.5-inch TFT screen, and LED lights as standard.
Optional extras include keyless ignition, additional riding modes, a quickshifter, cornering lights, dynamic electronic suspension, lean sensitive ABS, and engine drag torque control which stops the rear wheel slipping or locking when throttling or downshifting too hard.
The XR features a 15.5 litre fuel tank which has been made from welded plastic to save weight (2.8kg). It is built around a steel frame with a bolted-on steel rear sub frame.
BMW says it is looking to attract new and returning riders, as well as established motorcyclists with the F 900 XR thanks to its relatively low seat height (825mm), as well as the fact an A2 licence compliant 48 bhp version is available.
The F 900 XR will be available in three colours – light white, Galvanic Gold metallic and Sport in Racing Red. BMW has priced the bike competitively at £9,530 although you can expect to see this rise significantly when you start adding optional extras.
This may turn your head towards the BMW’s competitors like the new Yamaha Tracer 700 which was also revealed at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan.
