2022 BMW iX Production / BMW Electric SUV Factory. The BMW iX will be produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. Both the vehicle itself and the battery cells will be manufactured using green power across the board. The BMW Group procures the cobalt and lithium required for the high-voltage batteries from controlled sources in Australia and Morocco and delivers it to the battery cell manufacturers. The design principle for the electric motors allows the use of rare earth metals to be avoided in the drive system rotors. Added to which, the company sources aluminium produced using power from solar energy plants.
A high proportion of secondary aluminium and reused plastic also contribute to the resource-efficient production of the BMW iX. Its interior uses FSC-certified wood, leather tanned with olive leaf extracts and other natural materials. Recycled fishing nets are among the raw materials used for the floor coverings and mats.
The 2022 BMW iX will start at $84,195, including the $995 destination fee, and it’s expected for “U.S. market launch” in the first quarter of 2022. In U.S.-market form, its EPA-rated range is expected to be “around 300 miles,” according to BMW.
That’s for the iX xDrive50, which makes its debut with a dual-motor system making 516 horsepower. This version of the iX will have 200-kw DC fast-charging, a single-piece panoramic glass roof, and a new curved display with BMW’s latest iDrive 8 interface.
BMW has already said that the xDrive50 will be able to accelerate to 62 mph in 5.0 seconds and reach 124 mph. BMW says that a more powerful iX M60 model—developed by the automaker’s affiliate “skunkworks,” BMW M GmbH, will arrive in the future with more than 600 hp.
The iX is 195.0 inches long, 77.4 inches wide, and 66.7 inches tall, placing it between the Tesla Model X and Audi E-Tron by exterior dimensions. In range it will end up between the two models, while it’s priced higher than either of them. The big SUV is built on an aluminum spaceframe body, with a mixed-materials approach for the body shell, including carbon fiber reinforced plastic (borrowing some of the expertise gained in creating the i3 electric car) plus some steel and aluminum pieces.
The pack has been engineered for extreme temperatures—and, likely, some tough durability standards. It comes with three cooling circuits, a heat pump, a water-cooled condenser, and a system that can help harness excess heat from drive units to help keep the battery warm in the cold.
BMW says that the iX xDrive50 can gain more than 75 miles of range in 10 minutes, from a 10% state of charge, with DC fast-charging capability of up to 200 kw. Charging from 10% to 80% takes less than 40 minutes.
The iX has a modular battery pack that includes a gross energy content of 111.5 kwh and a usable capacity of 106.3 kwh. It’s built around BMW’s fifth-generation electric drive systems, with a boost of about 30% in power density for the drive system as a whole.
