The BMW i5 will be offered in two configurations. The base i5 eDrive40 will feature a single rear-mounted electric motor, developing 335 horsepower. The top version, the i5 M60 xDrive , will benefit from a two-motor system delivering 590 horsepower. Torque figures are not yet available, but expect around 315-320 lb-ft for the eDrive40 and up to 750 lb-ft for the M60.
Autonomy and charging.
The BMW i5 will use a lithium-ion battery of an as yet unknown capacity, mounted “skateboard” between the axles. The fast DC charging speed is not yet determined, but it can be estimated that it will be around 200 kW. As for range, BMW is aiming for an EPA rating of 295 miles for the i5 eDrive40. By comparison, the direct competitor Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ boasts an estimated range of 305 miles and a charging rate of 170kW.
Comfort and driver assistance technologies.
The BMW i5 offers great comfort, thanks to a well-damped double wishbone front suspension and air springs at the rear axle. The sedan is also equipped with a host of driver assistance technologies, including an upgraded version of BMW’s Highway Assistant, which now includes automatic, hands-free lane changes.
A competitive price compared to the competition.
If the starting price of the 5 series with combustion engine is 53,500 euros, we can expect the price of the i5 to be around 75,000 to 80,000 euros. For comparison, the Mercedes EQE 350+ is marketed from 80,150 euros.
