2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado First Edition – Great SUV. The simultaneous world premiere of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is an excellent lesson in catering to all expectations – the Japanese company presented versions for most regions: North America, the Old Continent, Australia, and (of course) Japan.
Returning to the United States after a three-year hiatus that probably felt like an eternity for ardent fans, the 2024 Land Cruiser should not be confused with the J300 Land Cruiser Toyota launched during the summer of 2021. Instead, this one (also based on the same body-on-frame TNGA-F platform) has more to do (like the profile’s design) with the 2024 Lexus GX 550 and the 2024 Tacoma because it borrows the i-Force Max hybrid four-pot turbo powertrain with 326 hp.
However, that’s only valid for the North American region. Instead, other regions – like Australia and Europe – are getting a completely different type of powertrain, a turbo diesel! And the Aussies also know this isn’t the J300 Land Cruiser from the very beginning because over there, the J250 series is marketed as the ‘LandCruiser Prado.’
Moving to the Old Continent, Toyota says it is “going back to its origins” from 72 years ago when the Toyota ‘BJ’ was born in 1951 to focus on “traditional strengths of quality, durability, and reliability to tackle the toughest conditions.” As such, the new release, which will host its pre-sales in October for European customers with first deliveries slated for the first half of next year, combines the series’ iconic off-road DNA with lots of new technologies – including the first-ever “electric power steering and new disconnecting anti-roll bar system.”
Additionally, the new frame is 50% more rigid, while the combined body and frame rigidity is up 30%. At the same time, the exterior design was focused on providing a classic Land Cruiser silhouette with many “strong horizontal lines.” In Europe, the 2024 Land Cruiser (also labeled Prado in certain markets) will be available with five or seven-seat versions (America only gets five) despite the ‘compact’ dimensions aimed at off-road prowess: 4,920 mm in length, 1,980 mm (width), 1,870 mm (height), plus a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.
Just like in the United States, you can have a 2024 Land Cruiser (Prado) First Edition – albeit only 3,000 lucky customers will get access to the heritage-inspired round LED headlamps and a couple of dedicated dual-tone exterior hues: Sand and Smoky Blue. Also, unlike in America, the European models will get a choice of different powertrains.
At first, there will be a 2.8-liter turbo diesel (shared with Australia) rated at 150 kW (201 hp/204 ps) mated to a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission and able to tow up to 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs). Secondly, from early 2025, Toyota will combine the diesel mill with 48-Volt mild hybrid technology.
