DeLorean Motor Company, the Texas-based company that bought out the original automaker’s assets and inventory when it closed, has unveiled the first images and details of its car, dubbed Alpha 5. more formal in public will take place on August 18 as part of the prestigious Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California.
Only the name and the doors have survived.
One thing is certain, the design is light years away from the stainless steel icon of the early 1980s. The work of the renowned Italdesign studio, it relies heavily on the fluidity of surfaces and aerodynamics, the drag coefficient not being than 0.23. The proportions are those of a grand touring coupé, with a length of 5 m (wheelbase of 2.3 m), a width of 2.04 m and a height of 1.37 m.
The ultra-thin headlights overhanging a very low false grille, the eye-catching oversized wheels, the well-stretched horizontal taillights as well as the contrasting black treatment of the rear part and the roof attract attention at first glance. The latter cleverly integrates the rear window blinds, an element retained from the original DeLorean.
Obviously, the main similarity is the gull-wing doors, whose wide opening seems to make access to the rear seats not too difficult. Because yes, there will be more than two seats in this DeLorean!
The passenger compartment is very open and uncluttered. A large digital instrument panel sits behind the steering wheel, while a second screen serves as an extension of the center console for vehicle settings. There is also storage underneath.
Electrifying!
Finally, the fully electric motorization of the Alpha 5 is a logical development and promises much more lively acceleration than with the old Peugeot-Renault-Volvo V6 engine. It’s all about 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 2.99 seconds – or 0-88 mph in 4.35 seconds for Back to the Future fans – and a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). As for autonomy, DeLorean targets a minimum of 480 km thanks to a battery whose capacity would be greater than 100 kWh.
