Ford unveils 700-hp F-150 Raptor R.

Ford unveils 700-hp F-150 Raptor R.. Ford unveils 700-hp F-150 Raptor R. Ford has long dominated the off-road pickup niche with its F-150 Raptor , but the arrival of the Ram 1500 TRX two years ago changed that. The manufacturer with the blue oval is now going there with a long-awaited response.

The 2023 F-150 Raptor R is the closest thing to the machines that compete in the famous Baja 1000 endurance event. «It’s our ultimate Raptor and when customers experience it in the desert and elsewhere , they’ll feel the hairs on the back of their necks stand up and they’ll savor every second of it,” he said.

The engine of the Shelby GT500.

As expected, the engine that powers it is the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 shared with the 760-hp Mustang Shelby GT500 . Several modifications have of course been made but, in the end, the power rises to 700 horsepower and the torque to 640 lb-ft. It’s still strange that Ford didn’t try to add a little more in order to overtake Ram’s TRX, whose 6.2-liter V8 Hellcat produces 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft.

Among other things, the engineers installed a new pulley in order to increase torque at low and mid-range, then grafted a stainless steel exhaust manifold and improved the cooling system to ensure durability in off-road driving. Moreover, the intake system lets in 66% more air to the engine.

As for the exhaust, it is possible to adjust the sound by alternating between Normal, Sport, Silent (the neighbors will be happy!) and Baja modes. The configuration of the various parameters of the truck is done via the MyMode function and you can save a special mode which will then be accessible by the «R» button on the steering wheel.

Reinforcements for the cause.

The 2023 F-150 Raptor R also benefits from new settings for the 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, a stronger front axle, a larger diameter aluminum driveshaft and a new torque converter.

As for the chassis, the rear suspension features extended trailing arms and coil springs measuring no less than 24 inches. State-of-the-art FOX Live Valve shocks complete the package, and their sensors (which monitor changes in terrain several hundred times per second, Ford tells us) allow precise electronic control.

By the way, suspension travel reaches 13 inches in the front and 14.1 inches in the rear – numbers that are almost identical to those of the TRX. One advantage the F-150 Raptor R has over its number one enemy is its set of standard 37-inch tires.

The look of the job.

Visually, this new model is also distinguished by its more domed hood allowing more heat to be evacuated underneath, as well as by its exclusive bumpers. Impossible to miss the orange «R» emblems everywhere and the graphic set on the walls of the body imitating the cracked soil of a very arid desert. Two of the eight paint colors on the menu are new, Gris Avalanche and Gris Azur.

Finally, the cabin contains Recaro seats upholstered in leather and Alcantara suede for optimal support. Carbon fiber adorns the doors and part of the dashboard. The central 12-inch screen is powered by the SYNC 4 system that can receive software updates remotely.

Reservations for the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R have already begun, and production will begin towards the end of the year. Impossible to know the price for the moment. For reference, the regular F-150 Raptor is over $96,000 including freight and delivery charges. The Ram 1500 TRX costs about $10,000 more.
