Ferrari’s Special Project department has been put to work again on something that certainly deserves the name ‘special’. It’s called the SP-8 and it’s based on the 2019 Ferrari F8 Spider. The Taiwanese customer for whom this unique car was built wanted to omit the roof altogether. “No problem,” says Ferrari, but the design of the F8 will have to be adjusted to turn the SP-8 into a real roadster.
The rear end has been completely redesigned by Ferrari designer Flavio Manzoni and his colleagues. Looks great, right? By the way, those taillights may look familiar. Ferrari ‘gained inspiration’ for this from the Ferrari Roma. Never a bad choice to use the Roma as an example.
Back to the front where a bare carbon fiber front fascia transitions at doors to the silver color found on the second half of the car. The two sections meet at the end of the doors where the air intakes are for the intercoolers and engine. The upper part sends air to the eight-cylinder and should remind you of Ferraris from the past.
Apparently the aluminum grille comes from a 3D printer. The new grille should provide better airflow to the front radiators. Even the headlights have been redesigned and the exhaust pipes ‘follow the same line as those under the 296 GTB’. There are special rims that are supposed to represent ‘a modern take’ on the wheels of the F40. Never a bad idea either.
The eight-cylinder is the 3.9-liter biturbo V8 that, in addition to the F8 (Spider), is also found in the 488 Pista. Ferrari keeps the amount of horsepower the V8 produces in the SP-8 a secret, but in the special 488 and the F8 it produced 720 hp and 770 Nm. Because the magnificent engine is right behind you, the sound must be fantastic (if you ignore the wind). Truly a special Ferrari. Of course, Ferrari does not reveal what the SP-8 cost.
